Our Checklist for Unforgettable Overseas Travel

If you’re hoping to visit an overseas country soon, we have a few tips to help you make the most of your trip. We recently returned from an overseas trip, and these eight tips will help you experience the sights and sounds of the country as no other traveler has before! Here’s our checklist for unforgettable overseas travel.

Research Your Destinations

When traveling overseas, one of the most important things you need to consider is safety. The U.S. Department of State website has a section specifically dedicated to that. Learn more about what other countries have been experiencing lately and how to remain safe at their local consulate’s website, or travel with a group like Intrepid travel so they can help provide protection and assist in any unforeseen incidents.
Next, book your flights early!

Once you’ve booked your flights, move on to booking hotels and transportation. Intrepid has a list of its locations and one of its partners, G Adventures, also offers accommodations abroad.

Book Your Accommodation in Advance

It’s smart to book your accommodation in advance, especially if you’re on a long-haul journey or traveling during peak season. Sometimes the choice of hotels may be limited so it pays to get your booking sorted as soon as possible. It’s always good to know what you are going to sleep in and where you are going to be coming back from in the evening after exploring the town!

Another tip is to make sure you plan where you are going and what your itinerary is. This way, if plans change or are canceled at short notice, it won’t cause problems or inconvenience. Likewise, it will keep you busy and on schedule during your travels. After all, having a detailed plan allows you to spend more time with those important to you instead of wasting valuable holiday time on travel logistics.

Pack Light and Right

First, pack light and right. This will keep you more organized and reduce your risk of over-packing or forgetting something. Keep in mind that you might be doing some laundry while you’re abroad, so make sure to bring plenty of clothing options of different lengths. To avoid ending up with a huge bag full of things that were never worn (and can’t be returned), resist the urge to buy lots of souvenirs or clothes. Instead, limit yourself to small mementos (e.g., magnets).

A smaller bag also means less stress and strain on your back and will make it easier to travel around town. If you’re flying, remember that you can always check luggage – as long as it fits in overhead bins. But avoid checking a bag if you don’t have to. Not only is checking luggage usually more expensive than carrying on, but it also means extra time standing in line at baggage claim with heavy bags.

Meet with Locals While Travelling

It’s one thing to pick a country to visit, but it’s also important to find out about the people and culture that live there. With a little research, you can make some plans for connecting with locals while abroad.

For example, when you travel to Japan, it’s a common courtesy to bring a gift like flowers or candy. In some countries, it’s also good to bring something local along with a gift from your home country. For example, if you were traveling to New Zealand and bringing gifts from your family back home in America, it would be nice to include an American-made souvenir as well as something made in New Zealand.

Buy Local And Support The Economy

In markets and small shops, spend money to buy local products and souvenirs that reflect the spirit of your visit. Not only will you support the economy of the region, but you’ll also have a better chance of finding items made using traditional methods or unique materials. Plus, it’s likely that anything you buy in these types of shops is less likely to get ripped off by a street vendor.

Keep in mind that products sold in markets and small shops may cost more than items sold by street vendors. But if you’re taking home a unique souvenir, it’s worth saving some money to get something special. If you can bargain in these types of shops, you might also be able to haggle a bit and cut your costs down even further.

Share With Friends & Family

Do you want to enjoy the sights and sounds of an overseas destination without experiencing any stress or discomfort? Check out these tips for unforgettable travel.

1) Get your visa early – there are certain visas that require lengthy processing times so it is best to apply well in advance.
2) Book your tickets early – if you plan on traveling during a peak season, it may be worth booking flights a few months in advance as prices may increase later on.
3) Pack light – traveling abroad means lugging around extra luggage, so do yourself a favor and pack light.

Do Not Overplan

Instead of overplanning your trip, you should take the time to absorb what each city has to offer. That way, when you plan on coming back next year or in 2020, you’ll know what you want to see and do! You might also find a new favorite restaurant or activity in the process. And if you’re traveling with a group, it’s important to listen to their opinions as well so that everyone can be happy with the plans they made together.
Overplanning can ruin your trip, as you’ll miss out on all of those unique experiences that catch you off guard. And oftentimes, it’s better to spend a day exploring your destination than checking off items from your to-do list. This is true when it comes to most things in life, but especially important when it comes to traveling overseas! Overplanning just makes everything feel a little more regimented and less special.

Relax and Enjoy the Journey

Getting from point A to point B is always the hardest part of any travel journey. So don’t be nervous about taking the time to enjoy your time in between. Here are some ways to make sure you get the most out of your travels -Get enough sleep before and during the trip.

1. Take care of your body by drinking plenty of water, eating healthily, and exercising when possible.
2. Keep an open mind – it’s easy to miss something important because we often expect certain things, but remember that it’s just as much fun discovering new things as it is revisiting old favorites.
3. Try new things! Have you ever wanted to go on a wine tasting tour in New Zealand or eat a bowl of raw fish with rice, in Tokyo? Plan it now and go for it! Don’t let fear hinder you. The world is your oyster and there’s no reason to leave home if you can’t share it with others.

Conclusion

Make sure to save some energy and relax before the trip. Be well-rested, especially if you’ll be doing any physical activity. Research your destination ahead of time and make a plan so that you don’t waste your time trying to figure out where to go or what to do. Get travel insurance in case anything goes wrong. Don’t forget things like a towel, a sun hat, and sunscreen (that last one is crucial). Dress comfortably when exploring new places. If you want to start well, use this checklist as an excellent foundation!
